CANON ALREADY ‘SORRY’ FOR SUPPLY DELAYS FOR NEW MODELS EOS R7 AND EOS R10

Canon EOS R10 vs EOS R7

It’s been a mere couple of days since Canon announced the release of not one, but two new mirrorless APS-C cameras. And now they’ve already issued an apology for severe delays in meeting the demand for their new products, the Canon EOS R7, EOS R10, and the RF-S lenses.

The two new cameras add to Canon’s existing mirrorless line-up of RF mount cameras but are the first crop sensor camera bodies to be included in the mirrorless range.

“Currently, we have received orders for each of the following products in excess of expectations,” the statement reads, “and due to the impact of global parts supply, delivery delays are occurring. We apologize for the inconvenience caused to our customers and business partners.”

The products affected by the supply issues are listed as the camera bodies EOS R3, EOS R5 C, EOS R7, and lenses RF 14-35mm F4 L IS USM, RF 400mm F2.8 L IS USM, RF 800mm F5.6 L IS USM, and RF 1200mm F8 L IS USM.

Canon says that they plan to ship the products one by one as they become available but that it may take longer than usual to deliver.

This is not any particular surprise in all honesty, as the previous new mirrorless cameras launched by Canon (the EOS R3 and prior to that the R5) had similar supply issues due to huge demand. Other camera brands such as Sony and Nikon have also fallen victim to the double whammy of the disruption to shipping schedules from the Covid-19 pandemic plus the ongoing shortage of chips and have delayed or even discontinued products.

Key Features

A key difference is the EOS R10 doesn’t have IBIS.

Multi-Function Accessory Shoe

The EOS R7 and EOS R10 have the new multi-function accessory shoe that supplies power and high-speed communication to advanced new accessories such as the Tascam CA-XLR2d-C audio module and Canon DM-E1D microphone.

Video Performance

Both the EOS R7 and EOS R10 use micro HDMI connectors.

It’s also worth noting Canon isn’t heavily crippling these APS-C cameras as they have in the past. It’s great to see Dual Pixel AF, Audio monitoring, and the new Multi-Function Accessory Shoe. All are included in the “enthusiast” APS-C models.

According to Canon, the EOS R7 and EOS R10 can both shoot video in 4K 60p or 4K 30p, which is downsampled from 7K and 6K.

EOS R7 4K 60p shooting mode uses the entire width of the sensor.

EOS R10 4K 60p shooting mode is cropped to 64% of the horizontal area.

*Audio compression is restricted to [AAC] in Basic Zone modes.

* Only [AAC] is available for audio compression of IPB (Light).

*1: Generated from 7K oversampling.

*2: Playback frame rate.

*3: Recording frame rate.

*4: No audio is recorded for Miniature effect movies.

  • Bit rate only applies to video output, not audio or metadata.
  • When audio data is set to [C.Fn 4-2 Audio compression: Enable] (audio: AAC recording).
  • Movie recording stops when the maximum recording time per movie is reached.
  • Sound is not recorded for approx. the last two frames when the compression method for movie recording quality is IPB (Standard) and the camera is set to [C.Fn 4-2 Audio compression: Enable] or IPB (Light) (audio: AAC). Moreover, the video and sound may be slightly out of sync when movies are played back in Windows.

Both models support recording HDR PQ YCbCr 4:2:2 10-bit BT.2020 in-camera or via HDMI. The EOS R7 includes an additional 4K 60p crop mode to further extend the reach – perfect for filming wildlife. EOS R7 4K 60p crop shooting mode is cropped to 55% of the horizontal area when selected.

Both cameras can record past an individual 30-minute clip limit and can shoot 4K 60p up to an hour, opening up the possibility to capture long-form content such as interviews and events.

For those who want to grade their images and get the most dynamic range, the EOS R7 is the first APS-C EOS outside of the Cinema EOS line to include Canon Log 3 and Cinema Gamut, allowing a more flexible version editing process and camera matching. Both models support vertical recording. EOS R7 is capable of combining IBIS with optical and Movie Digital IS for excellent stabilization, and EOS R10 uses data from lenses featuring Optical IS to maximize the effect of Movie Digital IS.

Maximum movie continuous recording time available:

For EOS R7:

  • Normal: 6 hr.
  • High Frame Rate movie (Full HD 120/100fps): 90 min.
  • If the camera’s internal temperature becomes too high, the recording time may be reduced.
  • 4K 30p HQ: Approx. 60 min. if starting from +23°C.
  • 4K 60p Crop: Approx. 60 min. if starting from +23°C.

For EOS R10:

  • Normal: 2 hr.
  • High Frame Rate movie (Full HD 120/100fps): 30 min.
  • If the camera’s internal temperature becomes too high, the recording time may be reduced.
  • 4K 30p HQ: Approx. 50 min. if starting from +23°C.

Overheating is an issue with most hybrid cameras, and I think the R7 and R10 could have issues in situations with long continuous recording in a warm to hot environment. It will need to be tested but probably will be an issue due to the compact size and no internal fans.

Could the EOS R7 be a good B-Cam for the C70?

C70 and R7

The EOS R7 looks like a solid inexpensive b-camera option to the C70 or even the EOS R5 C, especially with the $1500 price tag. Clog 3 and Cinema Gamut will make matching the two cameras a breeze.

I think the R7 will be a popular camera for people already in the Canon ecosystem and will be a good choice for shooters looking to get into a hybrid that is capable of both stills and video. S35 and APS-C is an excellent format for reach. Wildlife and nature shooters will get closer to the subject when using the high-quality RF lenses with the crop and using the sweet spot of those lenses and the crop. AF looks impressive, and it’s great that Canon seems to have not crippled it. Instead made it a selling point. I like this newish Canon!
